Description


Difficulty: Difficult
Trail Use: Moderate (Heavy during hunting season)

Trail Highlights: Go north to Spring Cow Camp (4.5 miles) and follow the trail west about 1 mile then turn to the south to find the Mansfield Trail.  At this point, you will be 5 miles from the Mansfield Trailhead.  This trail does opens annually on June 1st.  

Attractions: Predominant vegetation type along the trail’s lower stretch is Gambel oak.  At the higher elevations, the vegetation turns to spruce-fir.

Directions


  • From Rifle, head east on I70 for 14 miles.  At the New Castle exit (#105), turn left at the ramp and follow signs into New Castle.  At 7th Street (County Road #245), turn right and follow for approxi mately 7.5 miles.  About 1 mile past the Mansfield Trailhead is the Cherry Creek Trailhead.

- Dec 31, 1969 - I have walked about half of this trail numerous times, and it is quite enjoyable. I almost got run over by a mountain biker or 2, but we share pretty well! JK   -   [jmkopchik]
